MPN Awareness Month

Governor Kemp declaration

WHEREAS, Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs) are a rare set of blood cancers where blood-producing cells construct too many cells or cause formations of fibrosis in the bone marrow. They are often associated with mutations of JAK2, CALR, or MPL genes, and can be categorized into 3 types depending on the line of cells affected: Polycythemia Vera (PV), Essential Thrombocythemia(ET), and Myelofibrosis (PMF); and

WHEREAS, MPNs’ most common shared symptoms are risk of clotting or bleeding, spleen enlargement, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, scar tissue in the bone marrow, and progression to acute leukemia; and

WHEREAS, An estimated 99,869 people in the United States are living with or are in remission from MPNs. From 2013 – 2017 there were 61,572 new cases of MPN throughout the United States. However, the National Center for Health Statistics does not yet recognize MPNs as a cause of death, which leads to difficulty in tracing recorded deaths; and

WHEREAS, Observing MPN Awareness Month provides a platform to increase awareness of this disease and support those living with MPNs and their families with the ultimate goal of curing and preventing this disease; now

I, BRIAN P. KEMP, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim September 2022, as MYELOPROLIFERATIVE NEOPLASM BLOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia.
