“Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.”

about the verniero commission
In 2018, a small group of volunteers formed the Verniero Commission to advocate for individuals who often lacked representation and voice. Our early work focused on raising awareness of Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs), sharing reliable information, and supporting patients and families affected by rare blood cancers.

MPN Awareness month
… the Verniero Commission extends our sincere gratitude to Georgia’s Governor Kemp for his proactive approach in recognizing MPN (Myeloproliferative Neoplasms) Cancer Awareness Month in September 2023.

the history of disability
The history of disability in America is a testament to the resilience and determination of individuals. Many Americans have faced numerous challenges, societal attitudes, and legal barriers throughout the centuries.

samuel verniero
leading the way through pain and sacrifice
Despite living with a terminal diagnosis, including the rare blood cancer polycythemia vera and complex vascular conditions involving arterial malformations and aneurysms, Sam has remained steadfast in public service and volunteer leadership.
Appointed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to the State of Georgia Rehabilitation Council and the Statewide Independent Living Council of Georgia, Sam also serves in numerous civic and humanitarian roles at the state, national, and international levels. A Kentucky Colonel, Arkansas Traveler, and Ambassador, he was a Deputy High Commissioner for the United Nations World Humanity Commission for Asia and Africa, a member of the DeKalb County Community Service Board, and most recently, a Judge on the Selective Service System District Appeal Board.
Even while facing polycythemia vera, Sam continues to lead with purpose—advocating for those without a voice and embodying the mission and spirit of the Verniero Commission.
“The only way I know how to help is to spread information…..and push for change.”
