Verniero Commission

about us

We are a volunteer commission.

Back in 2018, a small group of individuals decided to form a volunteer commission that would advocate on behalf of those who could not speak for themselves.  Along with advocacy, it was decided to also spread awareness and information related to MPN cancer.  Ultimately, we are an informal group and do not accept donations.

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart”

meet the founder Verniero commission

Hon. col. samuel verniero, jr.

Sam has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, including an “offsetting” terminal illness. The rare blood cancer is Polycythemia Vera and the offsetting terminal illness consists of arterial vascular malformations and aneurysms.

But even so he possesses many distinctions including appointments, by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, to two separate State boards: the State of Georgia Rehabilitation Council and the Statewide Independent Living Council of Georgia.  Furthermore, he is a Kentucky Colonel, Arkansas Traveler and Ambassador.  Additinally he is a Deputy High Commissioner for the United Nations World Humanity Commission for Asia & Africa, a member of the DeKalb County Community Service Board, and most recently a Judge on the Selective Service System District Appeal Board.

Although Col. Verniero is battling Polycythemia Vera, he thrives on service to the community. Surprisingly, he is able to continue volunteering to serve the public, on behalf of those who entrust him as their voice.

2020 MPN Hero

Truly, Sam is a testament to the indomitable courage needed when trying to change the hearts and minds of people unfamiliar with MPNs. Although several strokes disabled his body, his effusive personality and spirit are intact.  Despite his challenges, he continues to work for change and voice the need for additional MPN research that could improve the lives of patients with MPNs.
